Finding Our Voice: History of the Speech Language Hearing Clinic
Introduction
As Texas State University's Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2018, the clinic and the Department of Communication Disorders prepare to move to their new home at the Round Rock Campus.
The history of the clinic is inexorably tied to Dr. Empress Zedler, the woman who founded the clinic. Throughout the course of her career, she became nationally and internationally known as a pioneering researcher and expert in the field of child psychology and speech, language, and hearing disorders.
As we look towards the future, we celebrate our past and pay tribute to Dr. Zedler and her legacy.
[Dr. Zedler's] research focused on two topics—the diagnosis and treatment of dyslexia and non-verbal children who have the capacity to acquire speech but do not as a result of brain difference. Today, such fields of study are well known, but they began with one of our own faculty, on this campus, many years ago.
