Elroy

The unincorporated community of Elroy (1892) is located southeast of Austin in the rolling hills of the Colorado River valley. Originally an agricultural settlement, it has remained somewhat isolated from development until recent years with first the development of the Austin Airport (to the north) and then the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), a massive car racetrack and entertainment venue. Neither has yet translated to significant local commercial development, but that may change with proposed new traffic infrastructure. Part of the Del Valle ISD.

I photographed the community in December 2020 and included shots of the cemetery, library, former cotton gin, houses, and the COTA. Although I’ve lived in the Austin area since the 1960s, this was my first visit to Elroy.
