A Raisin in the Sun Performance
On July 22, 1972, the Johnsons hosted a student actor group’s performance of A Raisin in the Sun at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park. The Ebony Players performed the play in honor of Johnson and his friend J.C. Kellum. The Johnsons invited six couples to watch the play with them, including United Artists President Arthur Krim and his wife, as well as the public at large.
Almost five hundred people attended the event, which was the first play performed in the park’s auditorium. SWTSU’s director of theater James Barton, and senior Leonard Wilson, co-directed the Ebony Players in their theatrical debut. After the play’s conclusion, Johnson presented the cast with a check for $1,000 for the Ebony Players' scholarship fund.
