Audiology
Hearing Care has been a key feature of the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at Texas State for over 50 years. Services include hearing testing for people of all ages and all abilities, including newborns. Audiologists and clients work together to decide the best course of action to offset communication problems caused by a hearing loss. Options may be the purchase of hearing aids, special devices for the telephone, TV or classroom, or a cochlear implant. Listening and hearing therapy for both children and adults with hearing loss is available in addition to hearing devices.
Texas State Audiology Clinic is one of the few clinics in the state that provides testing and treatment for Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD). A central hearing disorder causes speech to be distorted and inaccurate when it reaches the brain even though the ear is hearing normally. This causes difficulties hearing in places where there is any noise and problems learning in school.
Cochlear implant services are a recent addition to the Audiology Clinic. Service include cochlear implant candidacy evaluation, which helps clients in deciding whether a cochlear implant is a good hearing option for them; and cochlear implant programming services for clients who have already received an implant. These services are available for infants through older adults.
