Creating Building Blocks
In the beginning of his career at SWT, Strahan coached every male sport's team except for baseball, which was Oscar’s least favorite sport. Under Strahan’s guidance, the school’s athletics grew. In addition to coaching the basketball team for five years (1919-1924), Oscar coached the football team for fifteen years (1919-1934). Oscar led the football team to success over the span of several years, including a perfect 7-0 season in 1921.
By his own admission, Oscar’s passion was in coaching the college’s track and field team. He coached this team throughout his 42 year career at SWT in addition to being athletic director. In addition to keeping the track and field team competitive during conference meets, Strahan led the team to two TIAA conference championships in the 1920s. Throughout his time at SWT, Strahan achieved recognition for his coaching career. One of his most notable coaching accomplishments was his induction to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1954
