The Bobcat at Texas State University

The Bobcat in the 1920 Pedagog

Prior to Strahan's arrival to SWT, the school did not have a mascot for athletics. In 1921, a committee led by Dr. C. Spurgeon Smith, the head of the school's Biology Department, recommended that the school adopt the bobcat as the college's mascot. As athletic director, Strahan approved of the selection and it has been the mascot of the college ever since.

"A bobcat will fight you with everything he has; with four claws, teeth, speed and brains."  -Oscar Strahan
